Pattern Activities
Teach the concept of patterning before using these review activities. The first pattern to teach should be the easiest: ABAB. Next teach ABCABC and then teach ABBABB and AABAAB. The following activities are great for students from Kindergarten to Grade Two.
Fruit Loop Necklace
Materials:
• Fruit Loops (at least 1 cup per student)
• Yarn, string or string licorice (1 piece per student)
Procedure:
• Hand out one string/licorice to each student.
• Tell students which pattern to use or allow students to choose and write down which pattern they will use.
• Students string Fruit Loops onto the string/licorice.
• Assist and monitor as students make their necklaces. Help them to follow the pattern.
Action Pattern
Procedure:
• Demonstrate an action pattern and have students guess what the pattern is. For example, clap, touch toes, touch toes, clap, touch toes, touch toes (ABBABB). Give three demonstrations to the children using different actions and allowing students to guess the pattern.
• Put students in pairs.
• Have students develop a series of actions in a pattern and practice it.
• Have the students take turns performing the routine and allowing the other student to guess the pattern.
Pattern Scarf
Materials:
• Scarf template handout (one per child)
• Crayons/pencil crayons/ markers or different colored pre-cut strips of paper/felt
Procedure:
• Hand out the scarf templates to the students.
• Have students choose a pattern and write the pattern they will use on the page.
• Have the students either color that pattern or use different colored strips to form the pattern. The benefit of using different colored strips is that you can have students lay the strips out before gluing so you can check that they have made the pattern correctly.
• Circulate while students are working to ensure accurate pattern making.
• Completed pattern scarves can then be placed on display on a bulletin board.
